Inspired by Daiju Ishikawa’s Hebocon, Robot Riot is the backyard wrestling of robot combat sports. Complete amateurs and seasoned roboticists alike compete in small scale robot sumo with the caveat that the winner is decided by crowd cheering. This results in robot builders often forsaking saw blades in exchange for glitter cannons to win the hearts of the audience. I created Robot Riot from my desire to make an approachable technology community that encouraged creativity and inclusiveness. Robot Riot is a showcase of creative technology wrapped in the campy kayfabe of pro wrestling. With every show, I hope that inspired audience members walk away thinking “I can do this too.” Aside from acting as the main organizer I also create “loaner” robots for audience members to drive, ranging from circuit-bent Furbies to robots you control by eating donuts.
